Air Travel Advice in Volcanic ash

When the airlines think it's safe to fly after a volcanic eruption; you don't want to be on the "test flights" going out to see how the air quality is; it's best to go in the 3rd flight after the other planes have tested the air.
I learned this after listening to a pilot who was one of two planes who wanted to see the Mt Helen volcanic eruption back in the 1980's before they knew volcanic ash paralyzes the aircraft engines and the plane drops out of the sky.
The first plane to fly to the volcano had engine problems and took a nose drive, but managed to start up the engines again before hitting the ground. He radioed the second plane about the problem and they made a detour out of the area to safer air quality.

It's not only Mother Nature calling the shots; but any information you can get about the situation.
